My First Southern Cassowary

A Southern Cassowary on the Back Verandah of our MotelIn the year so far, up to the end of July, I have managed to see just 181 species of Australian birds, which is a long way short of my goal of 400. Given that there are only 5 months left in the year, and the 5 months from March to July saw only 59 species added to the list, I am not feeling very hopeful at all. My second goal of adding 50 new species to my life list is looking slightly more promising, especially after a big boost in July of 11, and I now have 19 for the year. This is still going to be very difficult, and I am really going to have to hope for a brilliant Spring and early Summer.

A Quick Cairns Getaway

Just back from a quick trip up to Cairns (Nth Queensland, Australia). It truly is a magnificent place to visit – at the right time of year. I took my new 400mm/2.8 Nikon lens for a decent try out. It just fitted in the carry on baggage, when attached to the camera, so I was comfortable in the knowledge that I did not have to let it out of my site.

I had many firsts for the trip, and am keen to go back for seconds!
